How to find a trusted trader to tile your home

Find your local tiling expert

So you’re re-tiling your kitchen or bathroom. You’ve been to your nearest Home Tiles store (naturally!) and bought the perfect tiles for the room as well as the correct adhesive and grouting to use with them, so everything’s ready to go. However, you don’t want to do the tiling yourself, so you need to find a professional to do it for you. But how do you know who you can trust to do a good job?

There are a number of ways of finding professional tradespeople, including tilers, which cut out the cowboys and give you the reassurance of hiring someone who’s reliable, experienced and will do a good job.

Word of mouth

You can’t beat a word of mouth recommendation, so the first thing to do is ask your friends, family and colleagues for recommendations. They’ll also, hopefully, be happy to show you the finished result so you can see the standard of work for yourself before you pick up the phone and ask for a quote.

The Tile Association

The Tile Association (TTA) is an industry body that was set up “To promote professionalism and technical standards in the tiling industry”. Search its directory of tilers to find professionals near you: the TTA states that every tiler who applies for membership “is carefully checked for financial, technical and service standards” so that all “members meet high standards of service and quality”.

Which? Trusted Traders

The consumer association Which? has a directory of Trusted Traders who have undergone a rigorous assessment process before being accepted. This includes “credit and customer reference checks, and a visit from a Which? Trusted Traders trading standards professional assessor. The visit includes an assessment of various aspects of the business such as administrative processes, documentation and complaints procedures”.

Checkatrade

The comparison website Checkatrade.com gives a breakdown of customer feedback, so you can find out more about their workmanship, customer service, tidiness, reliability, and whether or not the final invoice was the same or more than the initial quote. It also offers sections showing customer reviews and photos, and details of background checks and insurance.

Age UK London

The London branch of Age UK has a local business directory of traders that have been checked and vetted by the organisation.

Google reviews

When you do a Google search for local tilers, make sure you read the reviews clients have written.
