Porcelain tiles are made of a much finer and denser clay than ceramic tiles. This makes the tile itself much denser, which means that it is both waterproof and frost-proof. Porcelain tiles can be used outside and in most cases are the same colour all the way through so if it were to chip, you would not see it. Most porcelain tiles are fired at 1200° to 1400° and are baked a lot harder, making them very hard wearing and difficult to mark or stain, helping them to keep the their original beauty longer. This type of tile is suitable for all residential and the majority of commercial uses.

Ceramic tiles are produced from clay, usually red or white, and most of these tiles come from Portugal or Spain. A colour is put on the surface of the tile and then finished with a glaze similar to glass and fired in a kiln until hard. This type of tile has been used for thousands of years and is suitable (check out your nearest Roman ruins for proof!) for both walls and floors. They are not recommended for the heaviest areas of traffic as if they chip, you will see the dark clay underneath.

All tile manufacturers creates tiles in bulk batches. It is extremely difficult to replicate the exact same colour/pattern in every separate batch of tiles, so there is often a slight difference in appearance between tiles from different batches. It is always recommended to buy the full amount of tiles in one purchase, to avoid coming back to a store later and us only stocking a different batch.

It’s vital for you and your tiler/builder to check that you have received the correct tiles and that you are happy with the shades/batch numbers prior to fitting the tiles

You can find out what batch a tile is from by looking at its box, all tile boxes will be marked somewhere saying which batch it’s from. They are often marked with a number and letter, 1D or 3T for example.
