Monochrome interior design ideas

Monochrome interior design

If you are looking to redecorate your kitchen or bathroom, and are looking for monochrome interior design ideas, there is a huge range of different colours and styles for you to consider. It is easy to go for the latest, but possibly short-lived design and colour trend. But if you are looking for a classic, timeless look that is easy to achieve then consider these monochrome interior design ideas. A striking and stylish option.

Contrast is key to the monochrome look. The classic combination of black and white is so effective because the contrast between the two colours is so striking.

How to achieve the monochrome look in the kitchen and bathroom

White has always been a popular colour choice for kitchens and bathrooms because it looks so clean, crisp and smart. So, it is easy to add black against a white backdrop.

For the kitchen you could have black kitchen units or worktops and a black feature wall. You can combine the black and white in different ways. You can add a splashback in either black tiles to add some drama or white tiles to maintain the clean and bright look. You could also replace the flooring with black tiles. It’s great at hiding muddy footprints, or white tiles to increase the sense of light and space.

In the bathroom you may have a white bathroom suite so you could achieve the monochrome look by adding black units, blinds and tiles. Again, there are various combinations to choose from. You could have black tiles around the bath to create a dramatic contrast to the white bathroom suite and walls, or perhaps consider white wall tiles against black floor tiles.

Remember that you don’t have to stick to standard square tiles in a single colour; you could also consider shaped tiles or even patterned tiles in black and white.

Latest monochrome trends

Although the monochrome look is traditionally black and white, there is a trend to use a different colour instead of black. Choose a base colour which compliments your furniture and appliances, and add different hues, tones and tints of the same base colour to create a warm, cohesive look.

Add a splash of colour?

Purists may not approve of adding colour to the monochrome look, but adding a splash of colour can have a dramatic effect and create some warmth in the room. An easy way to achieve this is by using mosaic tiles which come in a variety of colours and patterns.
